How Retail Security Systems Work: Electronic Article Surveillance

They’ve been in use for a long time now, but retail security experts still consider retail tagging devices such as Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) tags one of the most effective forms of retail security.

We’ve all seen them – and if you’ve ever worked in retail you’ll have seen countless boxes of the things – but you’d be forgiven for thinking “how do EAS tags work?”

Allow us to explain.

Firstly, a tag is attached to an item, which is then deactivated – so that it won’t activate the alarmed gates at the entrance to the store – as soon as a customer purchases the item. There are numerous types of tag – a hard plastic/reusable tag, or a disposable paper one, and both need to be removed or deactivated before a customer leaves the store or the alarms will sound.

While the system does not eradicate the potential for customer theft, experts suggest that retail tagging helps significantly reduce in-store crime, in some cases by over 60 percent.
